Valuing arts and arts research

Valuing arts and arts research

This 2019 Valuing Nature Programme paper explores the contribution of arts and creative practice to landscape and environmental research. Drawing on interdisciplinary collaborations and practical examples, it examines how artists generate knowledge, challenge established perspectives and influence environmental understanding and decision-making. The paper highlights the value of arts research beyond communication and public engagement, advocating greater recognition of artists as equal partners in research and offering recommendations for more effective collaboration across disciplines.

In early 2018, we part-funded a workshop in partnership with Valuing Nature at the National Gallery in London entitled “Arts and the artist in landscape and environmental research today,” led by several LRG members. This led to the Valuing Nature report on “Valuing arts and arts research,” and laid the groundwork for the our annual Symposium in 2019, Staying with the trouble: Critical and creative approaches to the climate and biodiversity crises.
