The Concept of “Defense Landscape” (Wehrlandschaft) in National Socialist Landscape Planning
In this chapter from Military Landscapes, Gert Gröning and Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn examine how landscape architecture and planning became instruments of Nazi ideology and territorial expansion. Focusing on the concept of Wehrlandschaft (defense landscape), they explore how German planners sought to reshape occupied territories in Eastern Europe through settlement, agriculture and landscape design to serve political and military objectives. The chapter also considers the post-war careers of landscape professionals involved in these programmes.
A new book has been published, “Military Landscapes”, Anatole Tchikine and John Dean Davis, which features a chapter co-written by one of our members: “The concept of “Defense Landscape” (Wehrlandschaft) in National Socialist Landscape Planning” by Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn and Gert Groening.
